1. Avoid a religious man: Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; (1 Tim 4:2). A religious man is dangerous. He knows the truth but does not have the spirit (capacity) to do the truth. He judges everything in the flesh and because of the scriptures he knows, spiritualises evil and misled others. He has occupied many positions in various churches; he is unteachable but wants to teach others. He lives in deception and all his acts is to mislead others to err. (2 Tim. 3:2-9)
2. Avoid a Liar: “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;” (Col 3:9). Some people lie to achieve their goal, lie to make friends. Some have lied so much to boost their flesh that the truth is no more in them, it’s now difficult for them to speak truth. It is when you get close to them you discover their nakedness that they living in falsehood. The one who lied against others will also lie against you – it’s a matter of time (read Prov. 28:13-14; 2 John 7-9 & 1 Kings 13:1-32). They may even lie and give the impression they are protecting God or His kingdom – when we see your weapons of war, we know who has equipped you. “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” (John 8:44). A liar is an inflated man, he will soon burst. Satan inflated Judas till he burst (Luke 22:3, Acts 1:18, Prov. 4:23)
3. Avoid a prophet of man: They speak what they know you want to hear. They over exalt you because of their belly, they are no more prophets of God but prophets of men. They visit houses and take pride in knowing top government officials: they are in the pocket of the well to do, they fear their financiers more than God. Their sermons are determined by the rich. Run from them, the one who controls them will enslave you. “And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD to day. Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against Ramothgilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king.” (1Kings 22:5-6) Then verse 7-8. “And Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might enquire of him? And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.” (1Kings 22:7-8). The rich and proud maybe against the prophet of God, the prophet of men could be many but there are prophet of God and they won’t speak what you want to hear or give you sweets but quinine which as bitter as it is cures malaria. Becareful!
4. Avoid a man of anger: Anger is destructive and not a garment your friend should wear. “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:” (Eph 4:31); “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.” (Col 3:8). An angry man is a jealous man. He can kill in his anger as Cain killed Abel (Gen. 4:8). The belly of an angry man is full of cruelty, avoid him please. Even the Patriach Jacob avoided the angry man (Gen. 49:5-7). An angry man will not admit his mistake because he is proud and will rather get angry.
“And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.” (1Sam 15:20). It was Saul’s anger that eventually led to his rejection.
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.” (1Sam 15:23). If you don’t want to be rejected, avoid an angry person (Psalm 140:3-4). An angry man is not a patient man, he does more havoc than good.
5. Avoid a fault finder: Whoever is always critical of what you do and does not see any good in it but rather the faults, avoid. Beneath the heart of a fault finder is a quest to rule and control. He always thinks he can do it better than what you have done – this is Absalomic spirit. He will find every means to overthrow you and take your place. He also finds fault in everyone except himself in an attempt to make himself superior to others (2 Sam 15:2-6). A fault finder is a thief and guilty of every fault he finds in others (1 Tim. 3:11). If you don’t want to be polluted, avoid him and his sweet mouth with which he tells lie. A fault finder is boastful, builds mansion in his dream and wakes up to say he has a mansion. “Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.” (Rom 12:7-8)
6. Avoid a Power/Position crazy man: A position and power crazy man will do anything to get whatever he wants including selling his father, mother, brother and sister to get it. He can kill by any means to achieve it, he will slander and betray anything godly.
“Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.” (1Kings 1:5)
(Also read 3 John9; Romans 12:3).
Absalom died because of his unholy quest for power. Many have occupied government offices and became too big to be controlled by God.
7. Avoid whoever speaks against his spiritual leader: Whoever speaks against his spiritual leader (Pastor) or former pastor, please avoid him/her; he is an accident waiting to happen. It is not an act of boldness to confront your pastor or speak against him.
“Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown: And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD? And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:” (Num 16:1-4)
Whoever speaks against his leader takes the grace of God in vain. That your pastor sent for you and you decided not to go is not an act of boldness or that you are right.
“And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also? For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him? And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up: Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us?” (Num 16:10-13); also see verse 26-32.
If you move with such a person, you also will be destroyed. Separate yourself from rebels. Rebels see themselves as being more righteous than their pastor or former pastor. They are a restless unhappy people and go about speaking to cover their failure and frustration. Even Judas Iscariot was not careful to rebuke the woman who brake the ointment on Jesus and trying to poison other disciples mind against the act he does not understand and proving to be concerned about the poor and the kingdom of God but the underlying secret is that he is a thief and probably jealous of his master. “Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.” (John 12:5-8)
Imagine the boldness of Judas; but you know his end, be wise. Don’t let men praise you to destruction. Even Ziba plot to overthrow his master Mephibosheth (2 Sam. 16:1-4). You must avoid the Absaloms, Korahs, Abithers and the Zibas of today.
8. Avoid the unfaithful, ungrateful and bitter person: “And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.” (Luk 10:17)
Whoever bites the finger that has been of help to him, will also bite you soon. Such a person is never satisfied and unappreciative. Such a person is not going anywhere good – don’t follow him. He does nothing for anybody but wants all things done for him. He speaks against his helpers in order to get help from another.
“LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.” (Psa 15:1-5)
He is not faithful and cannot be trusted (Luke 16:12). At a point Jesus asked, were they not ten that were healed, where are the other nine? Avoid an unthankful and unappreciative person else you will be robbed of favour and honour.
9. Avoid Fire Extinguishers: They drain your energy and are not ready to learn or change by the word. They accuse you of every lack in their lives and if you are not careful, they make you their source. They weaken your motivation and slow your momentum in life. They borrow and not pay back as they assume you have more than enough. They don’t love you except that you meet all their needs. They grieve your spirit and always tell you of problem – this is bad, that is bad, everything is bad. Friend, if you don’t want to be depleted, keep off.
“And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.” (Matt 10:14)
“Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.” (Matt. 7:6)
10. Avoid Mr. & Mrs. Offence – Whatever and whoever brings offences to you, avoid. One of the trap of the enemy to keep us poor is offences. Offence stops the power of God from flowing into your life; that is why the people of the town of Jesus could not be blessed through Him.
“And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” (Matt 13:54-58)
Whatever will build offence in you, do away. To a question from John in Luke 7, he answered, “And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” (Luk 7:23)
This means, if you are not offended, you are blessed. What if you are offended? Wherever you go; whoever is with you that takes pleasure in making you to take offence, watch! Your head becomes a brass, heaven is under constriction (a closed heaven) – run for your life. Offence makes you bitter and prayer less.
